Marine Academy

As a leading player in Marine insurance for many years, we have accumulated a wealth of knowledge and expertise that has helped us to grow our business and develop an in-depth understanding of the industry.
Our Academy is a way for us to share that knowledge and expertise with our clients and other marine insurance professionals, through a structured framework of education and training.

The academy offers courses, practical workshops and tailor-made lectures on a range of topics, based on the most up-to-date market practice, legislation and regulation, and focused on the issues most significant and relevant  to  your business.
Courses can be tailored to your needs and are a great way to grow your knowledge in Marine Insurance and add value to your business.

Marine Insurance Course (5 days)

The Marine Insurance Course is a course providing an overview of all the Marine Insurance products, what they cover, how they interact in terms of coverage, and what happens if a claim is made. We also look briefly at some more general aspects, maritime rules and regulations, Incoterms, reinsurance, compliance, vessel types and emerging risks.

We include case studies, discuss examples of claims and increase the interaction by including assignments and quizzes into the course.

The lectures that are scheduled in the program deal with topics like Shipowners’ P&I, Charterer’s Liability and basic ship knowledge, like risk related vessel types, IMO, class and flag states. This course is particularly aimed at those who are just starting out their careers in shipping, whether as brokers, underwriters or claim handlers.

Introduction to Logistic Services Workshop

The logistic market is a challenging one. Operators are under pressure to add more value to their services, and become one-stop shops. They are often exposed to a wide range of legal and contractual liability risks and are not always aware of the extent of their liabilities when accepting an order. In this course we will discuss the various services logistic companies can provide and the risks and liabilities they can face. We will also discuss the legal framework that applies, look at Conditions of Carriage, other General Terms & Conditions, special contracts etc. and possible insurance solutions. This workshop will be given in Dutch.

Katie Benjamin

Katie Benjamin

Katie started her career in the insurance world at AMEV Interlloyd as a Liability Underwriter. Since then she has held various roles in management support and control before becoming the Reinsurance Manager for MSIG Specialty Marine in 2009. In 2015 Katie became the manager Broker Relations & Business Development for MSIG Specialty Marine, taking on the additional role of Carrier Manager in 2020.

Katie holds a Master’s degree in Law of the University of Amsterdam. She also studied Business Administration at the IBO Qualified Business School.

Darshana Satumalaij

Darshana Satumalaij

Darshana joined MSIG Specialty Marine in 2023 as a Marketing Coordinator, where she is responsible for supporting both marketing and the Marine Academy. Prior to joining insurance, she accumulated more than a decade of experience working in the fashion industry. Darshana started her career as a Visual Merchandiser across brands such as Mango and H&M.

Darshana holds a Commercieel Medewerker Marketing en Communicatie diploma from Schoevers Rotterdam. She also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Communication from Hogeschool Rotterdam.
